We did not see or speak to the owners at all whilst we were there, which was a little diasappointing: but they live very nearby. A lovely vase of flowers, and a selection of delicious goodies were kindly left in the kitchen area. The bed was really comfortable, and all the furniture and equipment were of a high standard. The surrounding area is beautiful - great for walkers when the weather is good. The Skirrid is only a mile away, and is well worth climbing, as the views from it are fantastic. There are peahens and at least one peacock wandering around outside The Byre, which was a treat! Parking was easy, and convenient. The town of Abergavenny is only a few miles away, and there is Morrison's , Aldi's and Tesco's there. There is a restaurant and a tearoom very nearby. The directions for getting there were very helpful and easy to follow.

It is the most spacious and well-appointed holiday rental we have ever stayed in. The very quiet location means it is a great place to chill. We enjoyed many local walks. The owner and family were very helpful even though they were very busy. A friendly, relaxing stay. Thoroughly recommend.
(March 2021)

Lots of nice walks close by.We were a bit restricted because of covid, it was fine as we stayed more local, But under normal circumstances, it was the perfect holiday destination. Kitty, Tim, and their son were friendly and helpful.
(September 2020)

It was in a peaceful location and the hosts were very friendly and accommodating.
(September 2020)

Enjoyed seeing the peacocks outside our window every day.
(January 2020)

There was no mobile signal and never saw the hosts. They did leave us milk and a cake.
(September 2019)

Abergavenny is a super town with good eateries. The cottage was cosy and comfortable. but kitchen wasn’t very clean. No one there to greet us and had we not gone to ask for loo rolls on the first evening I am not sure if we would have seen our hosts at all. Which suits us in many ways. I bought eggs from the farm . Hosts then were very friendly and chatty . We could go anywhere on the farm and see the ponies bred there. Resident dogs were lovely but not when barking during the night around our cottage where they had free range. It did give us a dog fix having left our crew behind. Not much info in the welcome book. One restaurant recommended hasn’t done food for 8 years! But we found the walks we wanted any way and pubs to eat in. A very enjoyable restful quiet break.
(August 2019)

The cottage was absolutely beautiful and very clean, with underfloor heating throughout. When we arrived the owners had left a cake for us and milk in the fridge, which was really thoughtful. The cottage had everything we needed for the week including a dishwasher, washing machine & drier, microwave, toaster and so on. The location was perfect and so relaxing. We loved the fact that the cottage is on a working farm & we were surrounded by fields of sheep, cows and horses. The owners were really friendly and welcoming & we would definitely recommend The Byre to friends and family and would love to stay there again.
(June 2019)

We stayed here for a long weekend but wished it could have been much longer. The owner made us feel very welcome with a cake and an Easter egg- a really kind thought. Would highly recommend.
(April 2019)

Animals and family nearby to help in anything you might want, but totally unobtrusive. Wide choice of places of interest to go. But for me the local walks, peace, fresh air, and tranquillity hit the spot.
(January 2019)

Very kind welcoming gestures of flowers, cake and milk. TV in lounge and bedroom. DVD player and DVDs Lots of leaflets about places to visit.
(September 2018)

Will definitely return!

Sykes do things properly; I was kept informed, the technology all worked and the whole booking experience was easy. The Byre's is a lovely cottage and the rural setting is great. We booked because we needed a base for our booking at the Walnut Tree Inn. Our expectations were exceeded as the Byre is so spacious, welcoming, cosy and well-equipped that we'd come back again to have a proper holiday in the area. A delightful experience all round; thank you!

This was the best holiday we've had. We go to a self catering cottage each year and this has been the best one. The surroundings are beautiful and a brilliant base to explore The Black Mountains. We have already booked for September.

The Byre was probably the best holiday cottage we have stayed in, in terms of quality, comfort and equipment.
(April 2017)

EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR
(March 2017)

Lovely property but not five star
When I saw all the five star reviews I expected something really special and in some ways it was. The Byre is basically a lovely cottage. Tastefully converted with quality furniture and well equipped with lots of running hot water.Although superficially clean, when we arrived my husband spent at least half an hour clearing away countless numbers of spiders and cobwebs from the bedroom and bathroom - a bit off putting at the start of a holiday. Also the outside seating area needed a spruce up - the furniture needed cleaning and there was litter (my husband picked up an empty Pringles box that looked as though it had been there for ages). Not very welcoming. The Wi-Fi was very slow - we could just about stream audio with some breakup but nothing more - probably little the owners could do about it - however I think this should be pointed before booking.

An October holiday in the Brecon Beacons requires somewhere warm to return to at the end of the day. This property is ideal. It is well furnished, spacious and has free wi-fi. The location is very rural; car ownership is essential. Steps leading to the front door from the parking area would make access difficult for disabled visitors.
(January 2014)

A very good place to stay. Warm and comfortable, with easy access to the Brecon Beacons..

from Dover (May 2013)

We had a friendly welcome to a terrific and well equipped cottage. The welcoming cake was a nice touch. It was a good base for seeing the sites and doing a bit of walking for a few days. The representations on the website were accurate. One of the better cottages we have stayed at in the UK on our travels.
(May 2013)

On arrival we were greeted with cake, flowers and milk which were really appreciated. We loved the cottage and loved getting out and about as it had been our first time in Abergavenny. The owner was a lovely lady and we were invited to join their family at their fireworks display. A delightful holiday except too short. Would not hesitate in recommending The Byre.

Can not recommend this property highly enough - Great quality of fixtures and fittings and the best equipped kitchen, a couple of amateur cooks could ever wish for. Being set on the farm with Skirrd Mountain in the background made a great base for walking and exploring the best the Brecons have to offer.

(05 January 2012)

We had a very friendly welcome to a beautifully designed and thoroughly equipped cottage (at a very reasonable price too!), and it proved to be a great base for a week in this gorgeous part of Wales. We enjoyed trips out to nearby abergavenny, Blaenavon, through Golden Valley and on to Talgarth, Hay-on-Wye and Brecon ... but also loved relaxed evenings tucked up in the cottage. As an extra bonus the tiny village has an unpretentious Michelin-starred restaurant, The Walnut Tree, which serves extremely tasty, locally-sourced food. Any downsides? None for us but don't expect a local shop, and watch out for the peacocks! Only hesitation in our recommendation is that we don't want to make this so popular that we can't re-book!
(December 2011)

Thy Byre is a really lovely cottage in a beautiful location near Abergavenny. The owners were very friendly, showed us round and even prepared a gateaux as a 'Welcome Present'!! The cottage inside is nicely decorated, spacy and stylish. As a bonus for gourmets; it is not far from the Michelin Star Restaurant Walnut Tree! We would like to say thank you to the owners; our family had a lovely stay at The Byre and we would definitely recommend it to our friends and family when they come to visit us again!
(08 November 2011)

Comfortable, quiet, lovely and extremely well-equipped cottage. A really helpful owner. Great situation for exploring the area with The Walnut Tree Inn being a nearby bonus. Very reasonably priced let too. Hope to go back one day.

The lovely accommodation, location, Welsh cakes, dogs, peacocks etc etc. Everything about this accommodation was good quality and it felt like the owners had gone out of their way to make us feel welcome. It is the nicest place we have stayed at.
from Ashford (May 2011)

Our unseasonably warm and sunny week in the Black Mountains was more than equalled by the warm and generous welcome we received at this newly opened property. The cottage itself is well furnished and equipped, and well located for days out by car along the Heads of the Valleys, Black Mountains, and the borderlands along the Wye Valley. The walk up Skirrid Fawr is easily achieved directly from the cottage. There are a couple of very nice restaurants within a short drive from the cottage; but we found we had to go a bit further to find a pub. All this at a very reasonable price - highly recommended!
