Recent Stay First impressions from the outside were disappointing. Access to the accommodation is via the bin area, which hadn't been cleaned, was smelly with lots of flies. However, once inside, the place is a delight. It's immaculately clean, very well equipped with crisp white bedding and big fluffy white towels. There's a view of the Abbey from the living room and it's just a few minutes, very pleasant walk into Whitby centre. The outside seating area is a nice touch. However, we didn't use it as it hadn't been cleaned and the furniture was splattered with seagull mess. Whilst the seagulls will be an ongoing issue, covers for the furniture would help. Parking at peak times could be a little tricky. In summary, we had a very nice break in comfortable surroundings and would be happy to return. Customer 1 (03 July 2022)
The house was very comfy & brill views from lounge window . Mr Herne (July 2021)
It was far from ‘immaculate’ as described, I would in fact summarise it as tired and grubby. Early on in our stay I went to the Yorkshire Coastal Cottages office to pick up a parking ticket and was a little embarrassed to mention that the property was rather grubby. The staff said they were surprised and disappointed to learn this and offered me a mid week clean. As I didn’t want to cause a fuss and as I initially believed their apology was genuine , I declined. My main intention was to make sure that the following weeks guests didn’t have to endure some of the things that we were. It was only when a member of our group subsequently checked on the reviews of the property in more detail that I realised that the letting agents could not possibly have been genuinely surprised as a string of reviews has told them how grubby the property is. The reassurance that they gave me about it being the last week of the cleaner and a new cleaner being installed for the following week was remarkably similar to the promise they have used for many of the reviews in the past 12 months. How very disappointing! To knowingly let out a property where the cleaning is substandard is clearly not acceptable. To do this week after week after many complaints is wilfully negligent and shows a complete lack of respect for the customer. I was told a member of staff was in the house showing a new cleaner around prior to our arrival. If this was true, why wasn’t the quality of cleaning actually checked? If they couldn’t guarantee a clean home, why keep the price of the rental at the original price? What we paid for did not match the description-the company are clearly mis-selling this property. For clarity of the future potential customers I will provide a summary of the positives and negatives of the property as we found it. Before I begin,I will again state that the letting agents have formally been made aware of ALL of the issues in many previous reviews. Exterior entrance vestibule. This was extremely grubby both on the walls windows and floor. One might anticipate some seagull fathers floating in to this space but the level of cobwebs and grime were well beyond that. As mentioned in other reviews this area was smelly and was full of flies. Perhaps the bins should be washed out periodically. We found ourselves holding our noses as we walked through this space. Interior vestibule. This was a pleasant space, great for storing buggies or bikes. The York stone flooring was very attractive. The plinth where the modem was stored was very dusty and was our first sign of things to come. Laundry cupboard -a very dirty, cob web filled space which contained a washing machine and tumble dryer. Buckets and spades and a few games were in this space too but were hard to access initially as all of the cleaning products appeared to have been thrown onto the floor of this space leaving us unable to step inside until we did a bit of rearranging. This was a minor irritation but nothing that caused this too much concern. Upstairs bathroom. At some point in its history, this room has been rather nicely decorated. Unfortunately by our arrival it appeared to be very tired and unloved. There are clearly ventilation issues as the shower grouting had patches of black mildew and the metal sink which supported the glass bowl was covered in rust. There was plenty of dust, spiderwebs and 8 legged friends to be found in this room. Main lounge area – I think the best way to describe this room would be that it was functional. It was a no frills room as we had anticipated but It is true that there is a very good view of the harbour and of the abbey. The windows were rather grubby but that didn’t concern us too much. Kitchen - this was actually quite well equipped. The crockery, cutlery, pans and glassware was all fine. Markings on the oven had clearly worn off , the barely visible masking tape instructions on its face were difficult to decipher but al least someone had tried! The tiled backsplash and cooker hood were greasy. A little unappealing! Bedroom 1 - this was a large space and looked promising. Unfortunately we soon became aware of yet more cleaning issues. Imagine our surprise when we opened the drawers by the side of the bed to find old tracksuit bottoms, dirty socks and a used tissue! On closer inspection the floors were very dirty at the edges. I could almost believe this room had not been hoovered or swept. On the plus side, the bedding and towels were very white and looked fresh. As we settled down to bed in the evening we were rather unimpressed by the many cobwebs that fluttered all around the edges of the ceiling in every part of the room. When I reached down to plug in my phone I had to push aside many cobwebs. As I got out of bed the next day, my stomach rather turned as I put my hand on the bed head to discover it was absolutely thick with dust. In times of Covid this was not reassuring! We found the bed rather small and soft but do understand that this is a matter of personal preference. Bedroom 2 -We needed to use this space as a double room so when we moved the beds across we were rather appalled to see the grime and detritus that lay on the floor underneath. This room was clearly in need of a deeper clean too because as we hoovered this detritus up, it appeared to be rather stuck to the floor. On a practical note, access to plugs in this room would have been a little tricky had we not moved the beds. This was a very small room but was functional if you ignored the dust and cobwebs. Bathroom-The main sink in this room was dirty on arrival. The mirror light still does not work despite assurances in a previous review from the company that they had fixed it. On a plus note the shower was nice and powerful. ‘Terrace’ -We had imagined when we booked this property that would be able to return from town and sit on the terrace with our family enjoying a nice evening drink. The tempting description of this outside space and the photo was our main reason for booking this property. What we found in reality was that this space was very limited. It is paved but the whole area is probably less than a metre and a half wide. I’m not sure if cleaning of the furniture was part of the weekly brief but when we arrived the chairs were covered in bird poo. Again you might expect some accidents from seagulls during the week but not as you first walk in. ( Fortunately some rain on the final day may have helped clean the furniture this week) Whereas we had imagined being able to sit around a little table, we couldn’t in fact arrange the chairs in anything other than a single curved line if we wanted to sit out there. Some large weeds bought a welcome bit of greenery to this joyless area but did not really add much to the ambience. It all felt very unloved, rather like the rest of the property. We chose not to sit in this area once over the week despite some nice weather. Sadly, this property felt unloved, grubby and tired, and was far from ‘immaculate’ as was promised in the description. There is a clear discrepancy here and I welcome further interaction with the letting company as I believe, given their failure to address the basic issues many customers have repeatedly mentioned, we were mis-sold this accommodation. I have photos of some of the areas of concern should they be needed. It is so sad to have to write this but someone needs to take ownership of the issues here. I had hoped that a quiet, private word would have been enough and I probably would not have written had I not realised that I had been lied to. Fobbing off the customers with empty apologies and promises is not acceptable and so disappointing. Mrs Sutton-smith (July 2021)
The terrace was overgrown with weeds and covered in bird mess. [Photos provided to you] The T.V. in the bedroom was not working and neither was the light on the bathroom mirror. The mattresses were very soft, as were the chairs in the lounge and not suitable for people with bad backs. The inside of the property was clean and the kitchen well equipped but the front porch was very dirty and had not been swept for some time. The view from the lounge was very good. A convenient location for all amenities. Mr Bride (June 2021)
Totally unacceptable Mr Lundberg (June 2021)
We arrived to find the gas had been left turned on, which was an extremely dangerous situation, and the response from Yorkshire Coastal Cottages was completely inadequate. The property description is also misleading - the outside space is much smaller than the website images suggest, and we were unable to use it as the space and furniture was absolutely filthy. Disappointing when this was the main reason for choosing this property for our stay. Mrs Swanson (June 2021)
Otherwise, we loved it. Mr Tooley (April 2021)
It needed a good sweep and clean in front of entrance. Everywhere was reasonably clean, but quite a few cobwebs. Not enough mugs. Had to keep washing them. The cottage looked very jaded, when we stripped the beds the mattress and pillows were very stained. It’s a shame because we would have booked to go back next year. Perhaps the cleaners don’t get enough time to clean properly. Mr Linnell (October 2020)
You sit in it and sink in, absolutely no support. The floor boards up stairs are so noisy, and could be an issue if kids sleeping downstairs. Overall, lovely apartment, great location. Miss Saunders (September 2020)
Less than 5 minute walk to the centre of Whitby although it's uphill on the way back ! Parking can be a problem but it wouldn't deter us from going to Whitby again. We couldn't get a signal on the TV in the bedroom but we left a note & I'm sure it will be rectified it wasn't needed. Lots of good restaurants in Whitby but usually need to book the day before. Mrs Pegler (September 2020)
It mentioned they would usually leave a hamper but due to Covid can’t, that is poor really as if that’s true you could argue they shouldn't leave anything whatsoever, but even if we give benefit of the doubt why don’t the owners leave the gift of a £5/10 for guests to spend? Only one toilet roll left which is a pain and rather tight, and only 4 large mugs with one chipped on the lip, no oil for cooking is also a pain. Also only 3 dishwasher tablets. Liked Whitby but parking became such a pain, at best it took 10 mins to find a W spot and worst I circled for nearly 50 mins which was no fun. I think for the money the house wasn’t quite good enough tbh. Mrs Steer (August 2020)
Some easily visible cobwebs in all rooms 2.Wheelie bins need washing out and the area in which they stand - unfortunately it is the first thing your eyes (and nose) meet Overall we were satisfied with our stay and don’t let these minor issues put you off I would recommend coastal walks,RSPB Bempton Cliffs, steam railway and the Magpie cafe once you have discovered the delights of the town centre Mr Bradshaw (August 2020)
.rented this property more than once. Dr King (January 2020)
Top quality accommodation. We will be back! Dr King (November 2019)
Booked somewhere else for next year as the creaking floorboards drive you mad when either trying to get an early night or lie in when others in your party are still up/up early. Shame, nice place. Mr Shaw (October 2019)
Finding a parking spot can be a problem but that will not deter us from booking another holiday in Whitby. As usual, Sykes provided a first class service again. Mr Stones (September 2019)
The West Cliff commercial side has blossomed in recent years to be able to offer both traditional and more modern facilities. The harbour and sands are literally only minutes away. Whitby has a character all of its own and you cannot fail to be sucked in by it. The welcome bag was a great start to the holiday and set us on our way. The Fishermans Warehouse was ideal for what we wanted and the sunshine was a bonus. Mr Hutton (August 2019)
It is near to everything. There are some lovely restaurants and cafes, Moutrey's, Madamoiselles and Rusty Shears were our favourites. Mrs Griffin (July 2019)
We had previously booked our twice yearly holidays in Whitby via another cottage company but the last couple of years had brought too many disappointments. So we decided to try your company as you appeared to offer a much higher standard of accommodation along with excellent service, We certainly weren't disappointed and this is the first time we loved a place so much we re-booked. Fisherman's Warehouse is airy, spacious and comfortable with a superb view. It's in a quiet central location where we can nip out in any direction. Well equipped, clean and tidy, it served us well. Having the second toilet/shower room was a bonus. Thank you too for the lovely goody bag and Easter Egg, much appreciated. We look forward to our return visit in October. Thank you for great service & accommodation. Mick and Elaine
Thank you! Anthony Vigor
Haven't had a bad meal anywhere and easily the best fish we have had for a long time. The Cook museum is worth a visit as is a trip on the railway. We didn't manage a boat trip, something to come back for - some great little pubs, Golden Lion and the Black Horse and the Duke of York is good value on the food front. The Dobinsons
Welcome by your staff lovely. Really enjoyed our stay. Perfect location, comfy, cosy cottage. Beds and pillows very comfortable. Spotlessly clean cottage. Kitchen sparkled! Lovely porch to dump all shoes, coats and boots! Would recommend Cinder Track walk to Robin Hood's Bay, May Beck Walk in Woods - lovely cafe half way. Magpie Cafe, Abbey Wharf, Moon and Sixpence - Happy Hour Cocktails - great atmosphere! Sanders Yard always pleases. The Shaw Family
Very friendly and helpful staff in the office, both on arrival and previously on the phone. Thank you. Great welcome pack also! Micklethwaite Party
