Salcombe has a foot ferry running from Whitestrand, in the centre of Salcombe, and the picturesque beach of South Sands, located at the entrance to Salcombe harbour.
Slightly further afield you can visit Kingsbridge and Dartmouth. Or head north into the Dartmoor National Park. Plymouth is also well worth a day out, and is about 25 miles from Heatherdale.
